Search Tuning Best Practices for E-Commerce

Optimize your e-commerce search for conversion. This guide covers field weight tuning, minimum match (mm) configuration, freshness boosting, content quality scoring, and price-based sorting.

Field weights: Title should have the highest weight (users expect title matches first). Description gets moderate weight. URI gets low weight (helps for branded URLs). Full text gets the lowest weight (prevents long-tail content from dominating).

Minimum match (mm): Use “balanced” for most e-commerce sites. This requires most query terms to match but allows some flexibility for misspellings and synonyms.

Quality boost: Enable quality_f scoring to reward products with complete descriptions, images, and metadata. This pushes thin product pages (auto-generated, missing descriptions) below rich content.

Faceted navigation: Configure category hierarchies as hierarchical pivot facets. Price should be a slider facet. Brand, color, and size as list facets. Use mincount=1 to hide zero-count values.
